Liverpool 0 Real Madrid 0 – Real Madrid win 3-1 on aggregate
Liverpool's Champions League campaign came to an end when they played out a goalless draw at Anfield against a visiting Real Madrid side in the second leg of the quarter finals of the 2020-21 Champions League.
Zidane’s Real Madrid arriving at Anfield on the back of a 3-1 lead will be thankful for the glorious opportunities their opponents missed to score in the first period.
[su_panel border=”1px solid #cc0000″]Jurgen Klopp's men in desperate need of goals to make up for the deficit, seemed to get off to a flying start when Mohammad Salah had just goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to beat from inside the box, but he shot straight at the custodian who simply blocked the Egyptian's attempt with his legs.[/su_panel]Salah was the focal point of some action again on 11 minutes when he teed up a ball into the path of James Milner who let fly from 25 yards as he made Courtois dive full-length to parry his effort away.
[su_quote]Despite the hosts' early dominance, Real Madrid came back strong, hitting on the breaks and almost added to their tally of three goals when Karim Benzema beat a diving Alisson.[/su_quote]Fortunately for the Reds the ball rebounded off the foot of the post as serious danger was averted. Liverpool continued playing with some intensity, creating two more golden opportunities before the interval.
The first came when Salah shot over from inside the penalty area after being picked out by Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum lashed a cut back from Trent Alexander-Arnold over the crossbar as Liverpool ended the first period looking the much better side.
Liverpool continued where they left off in the first half as Roberto Firmino forced Courtois to make a chest save from a tight angled shot from close range and the Brazilian followed that effort up by powering a drive just over the crossbar moments later.
[su_quote]Klopp brought in Diogo Jota and Thiago Alcantara to break the deadlock but Real were able to soak up the pressure and almost put the game to bed when Benzema's downward header from a corner bounced dangerously over.[/su_quote] [su_panel border=”1px solid #cc0000″]The Reds ran out of ideas as the end drew near with Los Blancos defending with defiance and resilience to seal a 3-1 aggregate win and set up a meeting with Thomas Tuchel's Chelsea in the semis.[/su_panel]Liverpool starting XI: Alisson (goal), Alexander-Arnold, Phillips, Kabak, Robertson, Fabinho, Milner, Wijnaldum, Mane, Firmino, Salah.
Subs: Jota, Thiago, Shaqiri, Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Real Madrid starting XI: Courtois (goal), Valverde, Militao, Nacho, Mendy, Casemiro, Kroos, Modric, Asensio, Vinicius Jr, Benzema
