2020-21 UEFA Champions' League Group B report: Inter Milan vs. Shakhtar Donetsk – Wednesday, 9 December 2020 – Matchday 6 of 6
Inter Milan 0 Shakhtar Donetsk 0 – San Siro
Inter Milan were knocked out of the Champions League in the group stage for the third season in a row on Wednesday after being held to a 0-0 draw at the San Siro by Shakhtar Donetsk, who were also eliminated.
Shakhtar finished on equal points with Monchengladbach but lost out to the Bundesliga side on their head-to-head record to finish third and will go into the Europa League instead.
Despite hogging most of the possession, Inter were hardly able to get past a stoic Anatoliy Trubin who had a major hand in keeping the score goalless. The hosts' best chance came in the 7th minute when Lautaro Martinez rattled the crossbar from a Nicolo Barella cross.
Inter forced a succession of corners after that and tried their luck from long range but gave Shakhtar's 19-year-old Trubin little to do. Romelu Lukaku saw his header fended away by Trubin after the interval before Shakhtar began to counter for the first time in the game.
Tete tested Samir Handanovic with a scorching long-range effort but Maycon sent the resulting rebound over the bar.
Alexis Sanchez, also introduced along with Eriksen in the 85th minute, had a couple of brilliant chances going his way but the Chilean headed wide from close range as the game petered into a draw.
It was a frustrating evening for both sides but Shakhtar were the happier of the two having gained entry into the Europa League. Inter, who could have gone through with a win, finished at the bottom of the group with 6 points after drawing three of their six games and are out of European competitions altogether.
